The Cold Winter Drift! Warm-up with these tidbits.

Interesting Facts
  • The Driftless Zone is characterized by its unique topography, with rugged cliffs, deep valleys, and winding rivers that were untouched by glaciers during the last Ice Age.

  • The region is known for its high concentration of limestone caves and karst features, including the popular Cave of the Mounds in Wisconsin and Crystal Lake Cave in Iowa.

  • The Driftless Zone is a hot spot for outdoor recreation, with opportunities for hiking, fishing, canoeing, and more in its scenic natural areas like the Mississippi River Valley and the bluffs of the Driftless Area.

Staying Warm in the Driftless

Winter Tips

January in Southeast Minnesota can be very cold. Strong winds, snow, and icy days are part of life here in the Driftless Region. The good news is that a few simple steps can help you stay warm and safe all winter long.

Dress in Layers
Wearing layers helps trap heat. Start with a warm base layer, add a sweater or fleece, and finish with a coat that blocks wind. Always wear a hat, gloves, and warm socks. The wind between our bluffs can make cold days feel even colder.

Keep Your Home Cozy
Check doors and windows for drafts. Use draft blockers or rolled towels to keep cold air out. Close curtains at night to hold in heat, and open them on sunny days to let the sun warm your home.

Eat Warm Foods and Drinks
Hot foods help warm your body. Soup, chili, and oatmeal are great winter meals. Warm drinks like tea, cider, or cocoa can help you feel cozy from the inside out.

Be Careful Outside
When it’s very cold, limit how long you stay outdoors. If you shovel snow or play outside, take breaks to warm up. Keep a winter kit in your car with blankets, gloves, snacks, and a flashlight—especially if you travel rural roads.

Help Neighbors and Pets
Check on older neighbors during cold weather. Bring pets inside when temperatures drop and make sure animals have warm shelter and fresh water.

Winter in the Driftless Region can be quiet, beautiful, and peaceful. With a little planning, January can be a time to slow down, stay cozy, and enjoy life between the bluffs.
